Waste rules depend on what material is generated and the setting. OSHA regulates employee protection around blood and other potentially infectious materials, while Texas agencies administer rules covering categories such as special waste from health care-related facilities and medical waste handling or disposal.
OSHA defines regulated waste for its Bloodborne Pathogens Standard and requires covered waste to be contained appropriately. Final disposal must comply with applicable federal, state and local rules.
Texas DSHS lists rules in 25 TAC §§1.131–1.137 addressing the definition, treatment and disposition of special waste from health care-related facilities.
The regulatory category depends on the source and type of waste. Specific transportation, treatment and disposal questions should be checked against the applicable Texas requirements.
